Course details

Pharmacy Graduates are required to complete a supervised workplace practice in conjunction with an accredited ITP to become a registered pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia.  Pharmacists are required to meet the standards set out by The National Competency Standards Framework for Pharmacists in Australia 2010.

The UWA ITP is a formalised, structured program integrated with workplace training and is based on the competency standards with a focus on the application of knowledge to the workplace environment.

Workplace training may take place in community or hospital pharmacy or other approved site in order to complete 1,824 hours of supervised practice as required by law. While the internship is a continuous workplace experience, the formal requirements of the training are divided between two core units of study (Applied Pharmacy Practice 1 and 2) that make up the Australian Pharmacy Council’s accredited UWA Intern Training Program.

The UWA Intern Training Program is completed in two sequential sixteen week non-standard teaching (NST) periods:

Calendar year start 2012

 Mid year start 2012

By completing the ITP program, you will also gain credit (12 points) towards a UWA Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice. This certificate will bring graduates to a higher level of advanced professional competence in Pharmacy Practice.

Admission requirements

To undertake the UWA ITP, applicants must enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice (course code 52250) and complete the two core units, Applied Pharmacy Practice 1 and Applied Pharmacy Practice 2.

On gaining general registration as a pharmacist with the Pharmacy Board of Australia, it is entirely optional to continue with further studies and complete the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice, which requires a further 12 points of credit.

Admission to the Pharmacy Intern Training Program requires the following:

  • certified copies of academic records (secondary and tertiary) and grading systems used (non-UWA students) relating to an appropriate pharmacy degree
  • a certified copy of proof of citizenship (such as photo page from passport, birth certificate)
  • a clear National Police Certificate

English Language Competence

All applicants for UWA coursework programs must demonstrate a minimum level of English Language Competence.

On commencement of the course applicants will need to have obtained from the Pharmacy Board of Australia the following:

Applications from domestic students should be submitted to the Faculty Office.
